About Me

Hi! My name is Jania, and I’m a senior at Brown University graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Statistics this May. My main interests are on data science and machine learning, but I also enjoy software principles and computer systems. I’m a 5-time Head Teaching Assistant (HTA) in the Brown CS department, where I’ve managed over 140 TAs and developed engaging course content for over 1,200 students.

My passions outside of Computer Science include:

  • Rugby - I'm on the Division I team here at Brown. I've been team captain and I recently won Strength & Conditioning Athlete of the Year.
  • Travel - I've lived in 7 countries and been to over 40. I love exploring new places and getting exposure to all the diverse cultures the world has to offer!
  • Reading - I read 50 books in 2023 and I'm trying to read 30 this year! These range from literary fiction (including the occasional classic) to YA mystery. Here's my Goodreads. I also enjoy collecting books almost as much as reading them!
  • Distance Running - I'm currently training for a half marathon and I hope to run a full marathon after graduation!
  • Desserts - I'm always on the hunt for a good sweet treat! My favorites are warm chocolate chip cookies, raspberry sorbet, and honey cake.

Experience

Software Engineer Intern (.NET/C# Driver) @ MongoDB

June 2024 - August 2024

  • Designed and implemented an end-to-end solution for migrating query execution from the client to the server, improving performance by circumventing client memory bottleneck
  • Enhanced the driver's Microsoft OData adapter library by applying meta programming techniques to support advanced query functions, including time and substring operations
  • Identified and resolved multiple translation bugs, leading to proper serialization of several data types and comprehensive handling of nullable numeric conversions

Head Teaching Assistant @ Brown University Department of Computer Science

November 2022 - Present

  • Hire and manage diverse teams of Teaching Assistants (totaling over 140 people) across four semesters under the mentorship of course instructors, demonstrating exceptional leadership and team-building skills in a dynamic academic setting
  • Lead the development and refinement of course materials, curating the learning experience for more than 1,200 undergraduate students in foundational computer science concepts (discrete mathematics, data structures, and machine learning)

Data Science Intern @ Takachar

January 2024

  • Played a pivotal role in transforming a project that directly contributed to reducing carbon emissions by developing an algorithm to detect spikes in biomass weight within agricultural waste reactors
  • Processed and analyzed 75 unique datasets to accurately track and plot weight fluctuations and the detected spikes, contributing to advancements in reactor optimization
  • Collaborated closely with Takachar’s Data Science Lead to refine detection methods, demonstrating a strong ability to translate complex data into actionable insights
